What we've learned from Sam (first month)
(From the pen of Sam’s mom):
Hard to believe it’s already been one month — the time has definitely flown by. I look back at the previous posts and realize that our original intent was to post “what we’ve learned so far” at 1 week — such is parenthood I’m learning.
Sam is growing like a weed — now weighing in at 9 lbs 7 oz (as of 8/11) and around 22 inches tall (I’m realizing all height measurements at this age are approximate as it’s extremely difficult to stretch them out fully).
As to (some of) what we’ve learned so far:
– Sam’s expressions are endless and never cease to make us laugh — even if we’re tired or it’s been a long day.
– babies are really loud sleepers – snorting and breathing like sleeping giants. I’m still puzzled how someone that small can make so much noise.
– Having family come out to stay with us and hang out with Sam has been helpful beyond measure.
– Sam has these funny hand gestures while he sleeps — two in particular worth noting: the “directing an orchestra” and the “trying to block something from smacking him in the face.”
– if we feed him a 5+ oz bottle at 10 or 11 pm we can get 4 straight hours of sleep (yes, that’s the record so far)
– when he’s about to eat, if he’s really hungry (which is most times) he does this funny “approach” shaking his head from side to side really fast. It’s a crack up.
– there’s nothing like looking at Sam and seeing him smiling back (he just started doing this reliably on August 12th — and it was worth the wait).
– He can go from 0 to pissed in a nanosecond — seriously — no matter how vigilant we are with trying to decode the facial expressions and cues. He also periodically goes from pissed to totally relaxed/sleepy in a nanosecond too (but these are *much* less frequent 😉
– Sam doesn’t nap easily but he does sleep during the night (for at least 2 hour intervals 🙂
– he can eat for 1.5 hours straight and be hungry again in less than 30 minutes.
– Parenthood is the hardest and most rewarding thing we’ve ever undertaken.
