Hairdryer — who knew?
Who knew that the hairdryer would be such a key tool in my first few months as a parent? All my mom friends said to be prepared to ditch any time spent on makeup, hairdos, etc – that I’d be lucky to get a shower each day :-). And while I have found that to be true, the hairdryer has actually been more utilized than before — as a soothing tool for Sam as he goes to nap (As I’m writing this, its hum accompanies my typing successfully helping Sam to transition from his restless “half-sleep” state to his contented snorting, deeper sleep breathing :-).
My dear friend from college, Suchi, was out for a visit this weekend to meet her new nephew and she had heard stories of the fabled hairdryer magic from both me and our good friend Daesman (who also had her first child in July — 1 week after Sam — and loves the hairdryer as well :-). Suchi laughed as she witnessed it work its magic on Sam yesterday — he literally stopped crying immediately after I turned it on and got this dazed, pre-sleep look that is so characteristic for him — casting aside all doubts and skepticism she had had :-).
