Silence

wow, the sound of silence.  I’m nervous to even type this as I’m afraid I might upset the nap gods who are (hopefully) now smiling on us.  Sam has been having difficulty napping for the past 2 weeks now — only 2 afternoon naps total.  The flip side is that he’s been extending his morning nap and dropping his afternoon nap, which according to sleep guru Dr. Weissbluth, even though it’s a bit counterintuitive, means he’s transitioning to dropping his AM nap (and keeping the PM nap).

Who knows what the real causes of these glitches in sleep are — maybe it’s the 12-18 month natural nap transition?  Maybe it’s that we took the next step in weaning at the same time (2 weeks ago) by dropping the PM nap BFing session?  Maybe it’s teething (he’s been drooling a lot and chewing on hard objects — but we haven’t seen a new tooth since April so it’s been awhile)?  Or maybe it’s something else — or more likely, a combo of many factors.

This will be his first nap for this weekend so I’m happy about that.  Yesterday he didn’t want to take his AM nap, which I thought would be ok as we had a morning get-together to go to plus a lunchtime birthday party.  I thought we’d get home around noon and then he’d zonk out.  So much for my plans — we were headed north on El Camino, on our way to Liam’s park birthday party, when I glanced in the rearview mirror to see our darling fast asleep in his carseat (which is beyond rare — he *never* falls asleep in the car).

So I turned around and headed home.  The nap gods were not on our side, however, b/c as we hit the driveway, he woke up crying.  And despite my efforts to soothe him, he refused to go back to sleep.

ok, off to rest myself a bit (our morning started at 4:30 — yawn.)
