Fun Tuesday @ Ardenwood Farm

milling the corn for the sheep’s snack

SPL and I spent our morning @ Ardenwood Farm on Tuesday.  We are still on break from music class which normally fills that Tuesday AM slot so I thought, since it was also my "home day" (don’t work @ all :-), we could do something special.

We’d been there on a Thursday during the summer w/ our preschool friends and on Thursdays there is a lot of programming: a blacksmith reenactment, different educational programs re. the animals, and a tour of the house (among other things).  Tuesdays generally don’t have any programming but it turns out, this fall, they’ve started a weekly program for toddlers focusing on 1 animal per week.  This wasn’t advertised on their website so it was a pleasant surprise for us when we got there.

Tuesday’s focus was sheep — perfect for SPL.  We learned about the different ways corn has been shelled through the years (starting with use of actual seashells — hence the name).  SPL even got to miil some corn for the sheep’s snack and then fed some of it to a very big ewe :-).  I didn’t get a photo of this because I was too focused on how he was holding his hand.  He did great but the ewe’s mouth on his hand still surprised him and he pulled away quickly.

We also got to take home a dried ear of corn to pop in the microwave. What fun!
