Loves to rake the leaves

Happy 28 months!

SPL’s “big thing” this month has been hide and seek. His dad taught it to him and we routinely play before he goes to bed. John will say “go hide” after his dessert, and he’ll get down from his chair, run down our hall (I love the little kid run!) and dash around the corner to the right (he only recently started to “mix up” his locations — for the first few weeks, he always pressed himself against the wall between our offices :-). We’d take our time finding him, which always results in giggles and sometimes “give away” comments from SPL. Here is a funny transcript of a conversation we had:

John (after SPL had run down the hall and turned to his regular spot): “Maybe he should find another place to hide”
SPL (from his hiding place in the back corner of the hall); “Oh.”
John: “Maybe his room?”
Sam: “no, I stay here.”

We were cracking up!

His language continues to develop and the additions that I remember include regularly using “either” and “at all” and “everywhere” and “everything.” Some examples that I remember include:
“I’m not hungry at all.”
“The houses/cars are everywhere (while we were driving around on Hawai’i.”

Some other funny quotes this month include:
10/16: “I want to go see the girls” — referring to the posse of 5 girls who live down the street. All are ages 4-7 and SPL especially admires their ability to ride bikes (as well as their Grandpa (Grandpa Ben :-).

And singing —
— singing old macdonald: “Old MacDonald had a farm and Bingo was the same-o”
— singing Bingo song, but replacing it *in rhythm* 🙂 with his own name.

And then the variation: “Bingo was the same Pearce :-)” (instead of Bingo was his name-o).

New play ideas:
Most involved using his pack-n-play sheet as parachute, and all of which are re-enactments of songs from our music class. He tells me to “stand up” and we sing “Zo Feji” (which is the airplane song). Then we sit and sing “balo bo”, tugging at the parachute alternately (at music class, the kids get in the middle and the adults alternately tug the parachute so the kids get a “ride” as we sing “balo bo.” And then he’ll wrap it up by putting away the parachute, grabbing a washcloth and singing “dio sho pa” which is the “handkerchief game” (it’s kinda like duck, duck goose but you drop a handkerchief nonchalantly behind someone in the circle and when they realize it’s behind them, they chase you back to your spot :-).

books of the month:
Leonardo the Terrible Monster — we love this one for a bunch of reasons, mostly b/c the author, Mo Willems (of “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” fame as well as being a writer for Sesame street) uses bigger concepts like “researched until he found the perfect candidate (to scare)” and “He snuck up on the poor unsuspecting boy” and and in the end, Leonardo “made a big decision.” Plus SPL appears as a character in the book 🙂

Grumpy bird — this is a funny book that John found. It’s about how your day can start off on the wrong foot and how friends can help you switch gears from negative to positive.

Bossy Bear — the message of this story is great for our 2 year old: “You are bossy, but you don’t have to be.” 🙂

Happy 28 months!
