29 months or “Bonkaroonies!”

his month, for me, was characterized by climbing and funny sentences/conversations. The climbing started on 11/17 and I remember it b/c it was the weekend my folks were here and we were @ the soccer game. SPL and I went to the jungle gym and all of a
sudden (or at least it seemed that way to me) he started climbing. And seriously, once he started, he wouldn’t stop. It was amazing (and a bit scary :-). He went up the ladders, up the slide, and even tried to climb up the small "rock wall" feature (needed some help with both the slide and the wall). Then on Sunday, we went to our neighborhood park as a family and SPL set his sights on the 8 foot ladder and slide in the middle of the playground! I spotted him on the ladder and John spotted him on top of the slide, and within 3 or 4 slides, he had it down (I was still spotting him on the ladder — but on the slide, he was golden :-).
When I saw Emily, SPL’s babysitter, on Monday, I asked her about climbing, as she takes him to the park most days, but she reported that she hadn’t seen this interest yet. So I gave her a heads up — and then Monday evening, she reported that she had a similar experience. 🙂 I felt like somehow a "climbing gene" had been turned on — and I was there to see it :-).

Now for some of the funny conversations and sentences. Here are some phrases he’s picked up:
"it’s ok."
"Let’s hit the road."
"I have no idea!"
And some funny observations he’s made:
"flowers have mouths?" 11/15 looking @ our flowers on the table — pointing to the center of the flower 🙂
"I cannot believe it! "
(his beloved stuffed bear) and
(Bobo’s buddy — a round yellow bird) are on the new cup that dad brought back from Japan (11/16)
"I’m just building a new playground" while he and John were in the garage (he was helping dad put up the new shelves (11/17)
"two points" SPL exclaimed after throwing the football and John caught it; "I tried" as he atempted to catch the football.
"We all have grandpas in our house. we have grandpa ben and my grandpa."
And my personal favorite:
"They don’t have fries @ Fry’s."

And some short conversations:
Kathy: "Can froggy help me with the laundry"
SPL: Nope, he doesn’t have hands." (we were talking about his frog that has wheels in place of feet 🙂
SPL: "Your earrings — where did they come from?"
Kathy: "Dad bought them for me."
SPL: "Your necklace — where did you buy it?"
And my favorite (this happened the week after Nana went home after visiting for Thanksgiving):
SPL: "How is Nana?"
Kathy: "I haven’t talked to her but I bet she misses you."
SPL: "I bet she misses Uncle David too."
Kathy (gave SPL a hug)
SPL: "And Aunt Sue."
SPL: "And Gracie."
Kathy: "And who else is in that family?"
SPL: "Evan!" (with a triumphant smile 🙂

Other interesting developments this month — SPL loves feta cheese now — thanks to grandpa! And "swiss cheese" became part of his vocab thanks to grandpa’s visit too.
He now picks up on things he hears on the radio — both voice and singing. One day we were listening to the NPR and he picked up on "Washington" and "hook you by the nose" (the radio was talking about using smells to market through the regular mail). He also recognizes songs that his teacher, Judy, sings in other place (especially the ones that share the same tune — which many children’s songs do :-).
And he loves role switching — for example, he now likes telling his own story based on pictures in books (holding book with the pictures facing his audience, like teacher judy does 🙂 And switching roles w/ John including wearing a baseball hat (like John usually does when he’s reading stories) and reading bedtime stories to Cheep Cheep.
Oh, and last, but certainly not least — SPL’s favorite new word of the month: Bonkarooney! He and his Nana came up with that over Thanksgiving — for when he bonks his head either accidentally or purposefully into something. Did I spell that correctly, Nana? 😉
Happy 29 months!
