Father's Day

We had a great time @ the SF Zoo celebrating Father’s Day with friends Jon and Liz, who are expecting their first baby in late August. Before going to the zoo, however, we walked down to see the Pacific Ocean (about 2 blocks away).  It was a beautiful sunny day so many people were out walking their dogs, fishing, and surfing.  SPL declared the sandy, rocky area near the parking lot to be the Moon and said “we’re astronauts, right?”  Definitely.  Then he proceeded to pick up some Moon rocksand leap on and of the larger Moon rocks (full strength gravity applied though).  As we were walking back to the Zoo, 2 firetrucksshowed up!  What luck!

For the Zoo, SPL had a plan to “see the predators” first but we ended up meandering our way through the zoo for a bit on our way to see the grizzly bear feeding (we knew this was great from past Zoo visit).  On our meander, we ran into theflamingos who were beautiful (both John and I have memories of mangy looking flamingos from our childhoods so we were pleasantly surprised).  We then found the koalas who surprised us (and especially Aunt Liz) by being awake!

The grizzlies were our first main planned stop — and we were just in time for theirmorning snack! w00t!  And we were also just in time to run into our friends the Hansons, who have 2 daughters, the older of whom is SPL’s age (and they’re buddies 🙂

After the grizzlies we wandered through the bears (SPL said “we’re birds, right, LRH?” and they both flew off) then found our way back to the carousel.  SPL chose the “fishing cat”as it was Uncle Jon’s fave and LRH chose the deer with antlers. After the carousel there was an animal presentation @ the theater that we stumbled upon (actually LRH and SPL ran towards it — or flew towards it as they were still in bird mode —  I think the knew something interesting was happening — but forgot to take their favorite grown up (and they had 7 to choose from!  :-).  They got there to catch the last half of the show which was showing 1 member of each vertebrate class.  We saw the lizard, snake, golden eagle, and porcupine (I’d never seen a live porcupine before).

Lunch was next on the agenda and the signs were right: watch out for the seagulls!  They’ll take your lunch literally if you’re not actively on guard.  As I pickup our tray, one swooped in on my head and I didn’t even know what was happening!?!?!  Thankfully it didn’t a) take our food or b) make me drop the tray.  Yikes!  The family at another table reported that a sandwich had been swiped earlier that same day.

What a fun day — thanks Jon and Liz!

Happy Father’s Day!
