Summer trip to San Antonio

Family photo

Since it was one of the hottest summer on recordand the one with the least amount of rain, SPL and I decided we couldn’t miss out.  So on July 22 we flew to Austin and grandpa/dad picked us up and drove us to San Antonio (the other motivation, besides seeing the grandparents and old friends, was John and Iwere celebrating our 20th high school reunion).

Despite the heat, we had a good time.  Here we are on the airplane ready to go. Here SPL is as we were landing in Austin: fast asleep.

SPL cracked me up from the moment he stepped foot in my old room: he found Aunt Beth’s old “Ma Trombone” hat and wore it non-stop for the first day.

During the week, we followed the path that the TX grandparents usually take: to thefish market to get some salmon, to the bread shop to buy some wheat for bread, and to the Twig book store. SPL also helped Grandpa make whole wheat bread 3 times!  I have video of it too — will post sometime 🙂

Other fun highlights included meeting “Uncle Short” (my parents’ friend) who not only made SPL his own toolbox, but also drives a “tatoo car” (term coined by SPL when we were in KY last summer and staying at a hotel directly adjacent to the national hot rod convention — it was sweet!).  Uncle Short and his son Ryan are both also accomplished musicians andRyan showed SPL a few things on the piano

We found a cool morning to visit the Zoo too.  SPL lovedlooking at/hiding behind the Zoo map. The Zoo had a new Africa exhibit which put all of us up close and personal with some swimming hippos (awesome :-).  San Antonio Zoo is best known for its diverse bird exhibitsand we saw a bunch.  Grandma even had some success feeding some!(after waiting, and waiting and waiting— luckily she wasn’t pooped on in the meantime like some other Zoo guests). Since it was so hot, snow cones were definitely in order.

Here are SPL and Grandma grabbing a snack in the hippo exhibit. Here is SPL @ the “stinky rhinos”(accurate name) and at the petting zoogrooming the goats.  SPL even posed for a photo on the lion statue on our way out.  We ended our visit with a ride on the train :-). More zoo photos.

Besides the reunion and going to the zoo, we mostly hung out at the grandparents house: gardening with grandma, lining up shoes with grandpa’s, making chocolate chip cookies, reading stories, helping grandpa clean the car windows, helping grandpa with the fire for dinner, learning about compost, having fun listening to Grandpa’s stories

Some of the big highlights for me were seeing my old friends from KIDS Camp days, Beth and Tony Cuellar, and meeting 2 of their 3 terrific kids (sorry we missed Katherine both in SA and @ CAMP the next day :-/).  SPL made friends quickly too and got both Tony and Beth to read stories to him.  Their 3rd child, MC (a boy), is now over a year old and his birth is the closest thing to a miracle that I’ve ever heard — and the story is truly mind-blowing (even to Beth and Tony to whom it actually happened).

I also got to visit withLeslie Busch Simonsen(friend from Mac Band & CAMP days) and take SPL to CAMP for a day where he got a personal tour from the camp caretaker, Bob (who was awesome). It had been 15 years since I’d been to CAMP and so much has changed (for the better).  Can’t believe they’re celebrating 30 years this year!  Happy Birthday CAMP!

And on our way to see Dave, Sun, GCL and EAL in Austin, we stopped by to see Uncle Lodis(who also lives in Austin).
