Summer trip to San Antonio

Since it was one of the
and the one with the least amount of rain, SPL and I decided we couldn’t miss out. So on July 22 we flew to Austin and grandpa/dad picked us up and drove us to San Antonio (the other motivation, besides seeing the grandparents and old friends, was
were celebrating our 20th high school reunion).
Despite the heat, we had a good time. Here we are on the airplane
Here SPL is as we were landing in Austin:
SPL cracked me up from the moment he stepped foot in my old room: he found Aunt Beth’s old
and wore it non-stop for the first day.
During the week, we followed the path that the TX grandparents usually take: to the
to get some salmon, to the
to buy some wheat
, and to the
SPL also helped Grandpa make whole wheat bread 3 times! I have video of it too — will post sometime 🙂
Other fun highlights included meeting
(my parents’ friend) who not only made SPL
, but also drives a
” (term coined by SPL when we were in KY last summer and staying at a hotel directly adjacent to the national hot rod convention — it was sweet!). Uncle Short and his son Ryan are both also accomplished musicians and
We found a cool morning to visit the Zoo too. SPL loved
had a new Africa exhibit which put all of us up close and personal with some
(awesome :-). San Antonio Zoo is best known for its diverse
and we saw a bunch. Grandma even had some success
(
— luckily she wasn’t pooped on in the meantime like some other Zoo guests). Since it was so hot,
were definitely in order.
Here are SPL and Grandma grabbing a snack in the hippo exhibit. Here is SPL @ the
(accurate name) and at the petting zoo
. SPL even posed for a photo
on our way out. We ended our visit with
More zoo photos.
Besides the reunion and going to the zoo, we mostly hung out at the grandparents house:

Some of the big highlights for me were seeing my old friends from KIDS Camp days,
, and meeting 2 of their 3 terrific kids (sorry we missed Katherine both in SA and @ CAMP the next day :-/). SPL made friends quickly too and got both
and
to read stories to him. Their
(a boy), is now over a year old and his birth is the closest thing to a miracle that I’ve ever heard — and the story is truly mind-blowing (even to Beth and Tony to whom it actually happened).
I also got to visit with
(friend from Mac Band & CAMP days) and take SPL to CAMP for a day where he got a personal tour from the
(who was awesome). It had been 15 years since I’d been to CAMP and so much has changed (for the better). Can’t believe they’re celebrating 30 years this year! Happy Birthday CAMP!
And on our way to see Dave, Sun, GCL and EAL in Austin, we stopped by to see
(who also lives in Austin).
