[Note to those of you who SPL will tell this news on the phone: act surprised! :-)]
The story goes like this: the tooth had been getting looser since February 14 when SPL first realized he could wiggle it (on 2/14 he went to the dentist who showed him the Xrays and showed him, as clear as day, the adult tooth right below his baby one. Dr. Gorgani also gave him the heads up that he should lose tooth in the next 6 months :-).
SPL enjoyed wiggling the tooth over the next 2 months but wasn't a die-hard, must close this deal type wiggler. This morning, however, he did say to me that "I think it will fall out either today or tomorrow." I took the longer view of a week. Once again: SPL 1, Mom 0
So we were hiking with his Adventure Day class, returning from the meadow where we'd had snack. As far as I remember, the tooth was still there after snack. We started hiking back up the trail and at one point I squatted down to talk to Sam eye-to-eye (don't remember about what now -- it wasn't a big deal). Then all of a sudden I noticed a big gap in his lower teeth! and it was one of those moments I'll never forget. "Sam, you lost you tooth," I said to him. And we both were a bit stunned and in disbelief. He smiled really big and then I started crying. Another mom also realized what was happening (she also has 1 child, a son -- but he is 1 year younger than SPL).
And since SPL is not one much for the spotlight or making a big deal of things, I tried my best to keep it cool (I too don't like others to make a big deal so I can relate :-).
