What an exciting month this has been — definitely one of my favorites so far. Sam is as busy and curious as ever.
Communication: This is the most outstanding zone of development for me this month. Sam not only started signing (more and finished) but he now goes and gets our shoes for us, brings them to us, and points or goes and stands by the door to tell us he wants to go outside. Even saying "are you going out (of the playroom)?" often provokes this response — he’ll run over to our sliding glass door and point or grab the doorknob. [Quick sidebar: I hope I’ll never forget the first time he signed "more" and the look on his face when he understood that I understood him — amazing].
Sock obsession continues: Each day starts off with Sam coming into our room and unloading John’s socks from his dresser drawer (he has the lower dresser drawers — bwah ha ha! Sucker!), clutching them to his chest, and running around the room or out into the hall. In about 5 minutes, they’re strewn throughout the house.
Running: Sam’s pace has picked up and he’s started pumping one of his arms. This bodes well for his busy-ness — he’ll be able to get a lot more done — and doesn’t bode well for his mom and dad who are having a hard time keeping up with him at current speeds.
Climbing: He now can climb onto both of our couches and onto the coffee table. Just waiting for him to figure out the Chicago shelving in our living room.
Bruises, Gooseeggs, bumps, scrapes etc: Sam is accumulating these at an astronomical rate. His recent encounter with a bouganvillia thorn resulted in a nasty scratch on his hand. The good news is he is much more willing to ignore the bandaid – this is only his 2nd time to wear one so he’s still very curious about them.
Most endearing development: Sam now requests books by retrieving them from the bookshelf (or floor), climbing into your lap, and bouncing with anticipation until you read it (sometimes he’ll sit cross-legged in front of you in “story time” fashion). Too cute.
Cleaning: This is a great developmental stage – Sam will grab a paper towel, Kleenex or one of his dad’s socks and start wiping the floor, coffee table, cabinet – whatever is closest. Hopefully he’ll maintain this helpful spirit through childhood and adolescence.
Pouring: He’ll pour anything – his refrigerator magnet letters, puzzle pieces, water, even socks!
Identifying body parts: He’s added knees, head, and hair to the lineup.
ok, I think that’s it for now. It’s been a hectic month so I’m sure I left some things out.
