this blows me away

Friday and Saturday nights were tough in the going to sleep for SPL category (and by "tough", I’m talking "worst nights since SPL was nursing every 2 hours" 🙂 — a dramatic contrast to his usual routine of stories, songs, lying down in his crib, grabbing his "bobo" and his blanket (thanks Nana!), rolling over on his tummy, and going peacefully to sleep.

Without boring you with too many details, suffice to say that instead of 7:30 pm or 7:45 pm bedtime, it was 9:00 pm and there was fair bit of crying and parent angst involved.

So….this is what blows my mind…and I only have 2 data points so far, so the scientist in me is still not sure about my hypothesis, but….in my moment of desperation Saturday night, as SPL was fighting not to have to go to bed, and I was singing the night night song we’ve been singing for the past 4 months or so, I looked at him straight in the face (in the dark) and said "do  you want me to sing a different song?"

And he said…….

"Yes."

So I sang this song from swimming class (tick tock — one that he’s been singing to himself lately) and a medley of other songs that came to mind.  He immediately put his head on my shoulder (like he usually does when he’s winding down), and after about 8 songs or so, I put him in his crib, placed "bobo" and moose on either side, covered him w/ his blanket (just like "usual") and he talked to himself for awhile until he finally fell asleep.

Phew.

And tonight (Monday) the same thing.

Stay tuned as I may have just jinxed it, but I’m tellin’ ya — these moments of "parent clarity" (as I’m calling them now) are somewhat rare, but man, I am stunned.  All that negative energy turned around by something as simple as changing the bedtime songs.

woohoo!
