We interrupt my backlog of posts-to-post for: “Numbers”
SPL came running in to our room this morning as I was getting my running clothes on saying something I didn’t catch the first couple of times. Then I realized he was saying "numbers." Not a usual word for him — though he uses it sometimes (mostly w/ our bedside clocks). And he’d just come from the kitchen or living room so it wasn’t the clock.
So he turned tail and ran to show me what he was talking about and he stopped at…….
…..the dishwasher.
Now that means nothing to anyone but me (and maybe John). SPL has been super curious about the buttons on the dishwasher — which is ok except for when you want the cycle to go uninterrupted. And in addition to that, he knows how to unlock the door (all these features are unfortunately on the front and w/in easy reach of 20 month old fingers).
and my teaching tool was to point out the numbers on the display and to tell SPL that when they’re visible, he needs to leave it alone as it’s working. And to be honest, even though I know he knows the word numbers, I hadn’t seen much from him to say that he "got" the connections I was making (he mostly just kept on with his curiosity and would get fussy at my redirecting his fingers :-).
Until today.
when we arrived at the dishwasher together, he pointed at the display and it clearly read "–". No "numbers." (he had unlatched the lock and interrupted the cycle and he wanted me/knew I needed to fix it 🙂
What a great moment :-).
