A fun morning
With summer coming to a close, school starting soon, and me starting a part-time mentor teacher job next week, things are getting even busier around Chez Howe-Lilly. With that in mind, SPL and I had a slow , but fun and memorable (at least for me) morning. I wanted to go for a run (John and I are going to run a half-marathon in San Jose in October — muscles, bones, and brain willing 🙂 and SPL wanted to go for a walk. So we compromised and walked to the firetruck house, looked @ the "giants" (dumpsters) and then started my run.
AFter about 3.5 miles, we headed for the park, but the most fun thing was we never got there. SPL found a cool tree with awesome, gnarled roots instead and started climbing on them. Then he saw knots in the bark above his head and thought they were snails :-). Then he found some acorn looking seeds and some other low-lying bush fruit that caught his attention. He picked some up and presented them to me to hold on to :-). We just hung out on the sidewalk, in the shade for about 45 minutes — talking and exploring. And then when it was time to head home, we noticed the sprinklers had been turned on and had left a good-sized puddle for us to splash. Definitely the way to say goodbye to summer. The tough part was getting SPL to finish splashing, and it took a bit of "strong mommy" convincing — but we weren’t out of luck yet– around the corner was a group of guys trimming a giant tree with a crane and multiple buzz saws — which all made SPL quickly forget his splashing sadness. We watched them move the large branch to the ground with the crane and then chop it up w/ the buzz saws. SPL also enjoyed watching them put smaller brush in the "chopper" and seeing the small piece be spit out into the large truck.
What a great morning!
Oh yeah, and we had a picnic in our backyard when we got home — SPL’s idea 🙂
I’m both psyched for school to start (SPL ‘s and mine) and I’m sad to see summer go…..
