Fall Fun 2011: September

Our fearless hero and his parents have been so busy that we haven't been able to blog.  So here is a catch up post for the fall -- so much fun! September: August 28, we celebrated our buddy CCG's 2nd birthday in San Francisco at a local park.  She and her mom and dad are great friends of ours (Jon, the dad, was in our wedding and studied CS @ Stanford with our John :-).  After the party we grabbed brunch with another family that we don't see enough of, the Epelman-Gomez-Freers. Throughout the month, our fearless hero loved wearing his shirt from Uncle Bryan's Iron Man triathalon(Bryan is one of the only, if not the only kidney transplant recipients to ever do an Iron Man -- amazing!) and also continued resisting having his photo taken (conditioned response?).  We also had a reunion with some of his young 5 classmates@ a local fro yo shop on September 2 -- fun to see the gang and to hear how kindergarten was going for everyone (note to self: do carry out fro yo next time and go to a park.  Sugar rush = crazy antics by 5 year olds and moms who also want to catch up end up herding cats and policing not chatting :-). On September 12, we made moon cakes to celebrate the Moon Festival (part of Chinese tradition) at SPL's school.  His beloved babysitterlead the way again and brought all the supplies tohelp 22 K-1 studentscreate their own moon cake treats. I even joined in on the fun! SPL joined the local AYSO soccer league and John volunteered as their head coach.  Here they are at practice. It was a fun season and SPL's soccer skills improved a lot especially in his willingness to go to the ball when an opposing team member had it, corner kicks, and throw ins. All this activity and new schedule made SPL more than the usual tired some days and on September 15, he even fell asleep in the chair reading his Lego book (thankfully his school has a great kinder schedule, easing them into school from preschool: from September to November he has short days Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (3 hours of class) and Wednesdays he has 5 hours); from November through May they continue to have 3 hour days for Monday and Tuesday and have full days on Thursday and Friday). He also continued to enjoy climbing and loved this spider web geometric climbing structure at a local park, in particular. See his awesome dismount! John bought him some paper airplane books and together they worked on creating the different designs.  SPL loved launching them in our house and it has the perfect place for it: (and hear him speak some Mandarin with his babysitter too :-) We also had some fun play dates withbest buddy NM, younger buddy with the same name SJ, and new classmate and friend Jand enjoyed the Harvest Festival @ SPL's school.  Each class was in charge of a booth and ours was the photo booth.  We brought silly hats and other props to liven up the photos.  John sported two of them for fun! And we got a rare family photo taken ta boot -- w00t!  And this photo is my fave -- from the beginning of this post, SPL lives his own version of the "3rd eye" made famous by his dad and Uncle Dave when Dave was just a baby (we have the photo somewhere -- need to scan it as it's hilarious :-) To end the month, SPL took his yellow belt test for Tae Kwon Do on September 30.  It was the first rather formal test he'd experienced and he did great!  They had a panel of black belt instructors sitting at a table in front and each of them had a group of students to evaluate.  SPL was nervous but was able to to all the to ()!  Congratulations SPL! You worked very hard and we are very proud of you. Next....October!
