SPL's Blog

The Life & Times of SPL · 2005-2013

Besides losing teeth & celebrating 6, where has our fearless SPL been these last few months? (Installment 1: Late Feb & March)

Things have gone quiet on the blog front due to excessive activity on the home front.  No time to document. Must. Do. Keep. Track. Of. Schedule.  :-) Now it's July and I have some time to catch up -- let's start with late February: We sold our beloved house in Sunnyvale (given the market we were psyched it sold & the fact it only took 1 weekend blew our minds :-)), had some icy mornings, and had some fun Adventure Days with SPL's Young 5s outdoor class.  We found some animal tracks (this one is a dog), learned to tell the difference between coyote, dog and cat prints, found some signs of spring, watched and listened as Teacher Tim told us how to figure out what different nat, found  a tree that birds store acorns in, found frog eggs, had fun with buddy DL, and got our shoes dirty! It was awesome. Then March arrived: First week of March: Nan flew out to help uswhile our babysitter spent some time with her father in China (thank you Nan!) and John went to TED.  SPL and Nan played a lot (and I do mean *a lot*) of Monopoly Junior. We celebratedmy 40th birthday @ Pulgas Ridgelooking for pack rat houses and signs of spring. We also found out SPL got into the Mandarin Immersion program at our local elementary school -- w00t!  SPL also began to develop a stronger view of the frequency with which I take photos :-).  On March 9, he and 2 of his young 5s buddies created a snail habitat in the play yard outside of school.  I think the final count was 13 snails. Here SPL iswith all his baby teeth still intact. Second week of March: Adventure Day took us to Pichetti Ranch in Cupertino.  SPL loved being with Teacher Tim @ the front of the group.  We found deer tracks and the pond was full of water so the ducks had returned. We also saw the CA newt, a fascinating orange-ish brown creature.  Teacher Marie had just returned from the National Science Teachers' Assoc. Conference in SF where she'd picked up some mini-microscopes. The kids and parents loved them!  SPL continuedto climb any treeor branch that he could shinny up.  And once again, our boots were filthy so we chalked it up as a successful week! Third week of March: SPL had a fun time @ his best buddy NM's house on St. Patrick's Day.  KM, NM's older brother, enjoyed reading to the younger boys Missile Mouse. At school, SPL had mastered the art of "news"(a weekly sharing of 1-2 sentences about what has happened recently.  It was tough for SPL in the beginning, but he overcame his reticence and even did "sharing" and "news" every 8 weeks or so).  At school, they learned about gravityand had fun creating structures from the puffed packing peanuts. Fourth week of March: we had a blast at Arastradero Preserve on March 22, wading through the mud, finding our location on a topo map, making mud pies, finding a small frogf, finding a worm, and seeing bunnies frolic in the grass. At the end of March, we had some sad news.  SPL's great-grandmother, Margaret Elizabeth Estes Mack, died after a long series of illnesses.  She was a kind, funny woman who loved people, was a devoted friend, and a pioneer of arts in Lexington Kentucky. Fortunately, SPL and I had visited her and SPL's great-grandfather last summer so we have some recent fond memories.  During that visit, she braved the 100+ temperatures to watch SPL ride the horse @ the Kentucky Horse Park.  She was 88 years old and had been married to my grandfather for 66 years.  We will miss you Gram! Will post next about April and May!
